Forum: prelinger Subject: General Organization...hmmmm

I was reading Spuzz's post about reviews and if some of the review should be included, etc. I didn't really understand all of the details about that, but it got me thinking about more general things, having been a severe user of Prelinger Archives for several years now. I wonder if any of these suggestions might help. And again, only to be helpful, not critical!

I remember when I first watched "The Story of our Flag", loved it, wanted to find it again. Using the "browse by keyword" I looked under "flags"...Not there! I don't know who on God's green earth wouldn't think "The Story of our Flag" could be found by clicking on "Flags" for crying out loud..

And there are so many other things like that-silent films with sound, sound films marked silent, black and white films marked color, color films that are black and white. There are films which have been "missing from the servers" literally for years. I think if it's not there, pull the page until you find it so people click less dead links. Sometimes a part 2 is a duplicate of part 1, forcing people to download it twice! Another problem is so many of the films are in multiple parts. Maybe that is to keep historically correct (ie existed in two reels) but wouldn't it be a lot easier to merge them into one download instead of everyone having to hunt all the parts down? Less films would get lost, too..Have you ever noticed how many people downloaded only a part one and missed the rest of the film because they didn't know how to hike the maze and find the rest? Nowdays with broadband, people don't mind greater than 1GB downloads. It would sure be easier to get, say "Combat America" in one click instead of four..And reviewers wouldn't have to copy/paste their reviews four times to make sure they get read.

And reviews disappear, too! Before I reviewed "Atomic Power at Shippingport" I specifically remember a good review saying the neon at the end was the only redeeming quality! But who knows where this persons hard work went? Maybe it's back, but I would be upset if my review evaporated.
So at times, it felt like no one was "minding the store" which was okay, the downloads worked-so what's my big problem? Really nothing except that I think more people could enjoy the films if they were sorted out a bit.

well, we are constantly working to improve things.
however, there is a very small number of "fulltime equivalent people" who work on this website, so it's always rather daunting.

but the real reason i wanted to respond is that i just flipped our review/meta/files editing system to use a newer backend system that should stop "losing" these edit changes.

so at least that aspect should be better starting today.

Thanks, Tracy Pooh. Reminds me of one of the classic films on Prelinger Archives called "The Bright Young Newcomer" Where the new person reworks all of the established filing systems at a company. If you need a laugh, see it! Seems like you know computers very well and your work is truly appreciated!

I totally agree with Vis on this one.

"Why can't the older people here accept new ideas?'

Good eye, Vis, Good eye!

tee hee, thanks for the recommendation.

that film reminds me of the little quibbles parker and i get into sometimes (tee hee! i loves ya, parker! 8-)

we just had a non-admin try out our "new movies system" and got high marks. so hopefully when that's live a lot more of the little things and problems will resolve!
